If they aren't crooks, then you get what you wanted. If they are crooks, then you get your money back.

At the same time, if you go into it with your eyes open and are not missold then the compensation going to those who were missold will affect your returns.
The first pension I started paying into wasn't missold to me but, at least partially, my returns have been hit because of all the misselling to other people.
My partners endowments weren't missold but the companies are now paying out to people who claim they didn't understand what they were getting into. This is affecting her potential returns.
