Funny Tax Situation

No it's not. That may be their full-time employment lifetime, but that is different.

When you had a card to be stamped it was easy.

But you can make voluntary contributions to complete full years during this time, if you have been doing part-time and vacation work.

At least one university doesn't allow it's students to take any employment (at least until "recently"). That means, if the student doesn't want to risk being chucked out for breaking university rules, they *can't* work.

I think you've interpreted Terry's if-clause as qualifying the rest of his sentence in a way he did not intend. He must have meant that if any work you might have been doing was insufficient to make a year qualify, then you could complete it by making VCs. I don't think he intended "you can make VCs if you have been doing work" to mean that working was a necessary condition for being allowed to make VCs.

Overpayment of NI is calculated per tax year when there's more than one source of employment/self-employment. On a weekly or monthly basis there are rules and the deduction is either correct (usually) or incorrect (rarely).

Do you mean in term-time or at any time?

We were not supposed to work in the vacations without our tutor's permission, but that was not unreasonably withheld. Christmas Post, Reserve Service with the RAF, and bus conducting in the summer were all tolerated.

Sorry to go back to this now, but this week I may go over the 717 amount because I might do more than the hours I thought I would, so what would happen if my weekly income (and I guess you mean gross income) is higher than this?

Taxed more on both jobs? Taxed more on main job? NI'd more on both jobs? NI'd more on second job or some other unthought-of or fanciful and horrid combination of some or all of these?!
