Am I missing something - or can I really not get a report that shows the Unitof Measure column in a Item Valuation report? We have just done inventory and need to go around and get costs for things that come by the case - or each - or lb - depending if they are buying the bulk. Cannot find that column anywhere. Has to be here and I am missing it. Please help.
While I am asking - another OBVIOUS "missing link (or is it a Yettie?)... Why can't we walk around the shelves with a data collector i.e. Percon, scan the shelf, take the Percon to the office and import the needed item numbers to the Label Wizard and have a barcode blaster shoot out the labels?? That is
1996 - what are we going backward in features?
Need em need em need em. Had one third party vendor offer to write the import to labels for $2,000. Wow. Any takers for like $100?

The the Item.UnitOfMeasure column needs to be added to the report.
I have never worked with Percon data collector but I would assume that this device has the ability to export out a CSV file. Are you trying to do an inventory count then print labels for your current inventory values? If you are you need to import the exported CSV file into a Physical Inventory count sheet, update your inventory then print the labels based on Stock On Hand for those items. There is no way of importing items with quantities directly into the label wizard. You may want to add this as a Product Suggestion.

Thanks for the response. I guess everybody out there knows how to "add a column" to a report. But I don't. I was looking around trying to figure it out but I just don't have the time. I would so appreciate either instructions to add the column or if anybody could just create a valuation report with the unit of measure column - I will try to reciprocate with whatever skill I might have to offer in exchange. My client is actually waiting for me so that he can go and start counting his bulk warehouse. for future use I guess. thanks all.
and as for the inability to simply scan items and create tags - Ludicrous. Who do I contact that cares enough about a "Product Suggestion"?
I have been selling installing training and supporting Point of Sale software and hardware for the last 8 years now and it is quite obvious that whoever has finalized these products has not been in the "field" or the "trenches" as they say. Or else they had pretty mellow customers who didn't really want to utilize the software as a total solution.
I love the RMS software and its active report windows, etc. I think it has some really trick and needed features. But just when you get somebody hooked on such a fine solution such as the active reporting, you cannot do something as basic as put a shelf tag in your store so that people can buy the product. Not easily at least. Or import data collected items for purchase order creation. Transfer in/out.
I believe if you guys can customize a report, you can certainly modify the QSImport Utility to include importing to these specified files. What do you think?

To add a column to the Item Value report follow the instructions below. Navigate to this folder: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Retail Management System\Store Operations\Reports Find the file Items - Item Value List.qrp make a copy of the file. Rename the copied file to Custom - Item Value List.qrp. Right click on the copied file and uncheck Read Only, click Apply. Double click the copied file and open the file using Notepad. Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the file and add the text below:
********************************* Begin Column FieldName = "Item.UnitOfMeasure DrillDownFieldName = "" DrillDownReportName = "" Title = "Unit of Measure" VBDataType = vbString Formula = "" ColHidden = False ColNotDisplayable = False FilterDisabled = False ColWidth = 2085 GroupMethod = groupmethodNone ColFormat = "" ColAlignment = flexAlignLeftCenter End Column
*********************************** Save the file. If SO Manager is open exit out and restart. Navigate to Reports --> Custom --> Item Value List the column UnitOfMeasure should now appear in your report.
If you use a regular barcode scanner you can open the Label Wizard and press the QuickScan button to scan in items to have labels printed, but in order for you to do this you would either need a wireless scanner or a laptop with the label printer attached on a cart.
Retail Realm has an import tool that can import PO's.

do a search for RITE Label - it's an addin that does extended label printing. Not sure if you can import a CSV file, but it may.
To add a column... First, as a reseller, you can download the "Customization Guide" from Partner Source - it documents the active reports format pretty well.
To get you started... Browse to ...\StoreOperations\Reports\Items - Item Value List.qrp in Windows Explorer Make a copy of the original file just in case Right Click the original file, go to properties and uncheck Read Only open it in notepad
paste this at the bottom of the file...
Begin Column FieldName = "Item.UnitOfMeasure" DrillDownFieldName = "" DrillDownReportName = "" Title = "Unit of Measure" VBDataType = vbString Formula = "" ColHidden = False ColNotDisplayable = False FilterDisabled = False ColWidth = 1320 GroupMethod = groupmethodNone ColFormat = "" ColAlignment = flexAlignLeftCenter End Column
Save the file and try running the report again...

Roxanne,
If you've been training and supporting POS software for 8 years, a) why are you posting a very basic question, b) in the public end-user newsgroup, c) without even searching this newsgroup on how to add a column to a report, that's been discussed 100's of times, d) to display your lack of basic knowledge about the RMS program.
Glad I didn't buy it from you. You give the rest of us a bad name.
Or are you that rabble rouser reseller from that's trying to bail from failing Retail Pro program?
Rather than coming here to ask all of the end-users to help you learn about RMS/POS, a) try looking back at your training manuals, b) or your 300 page Partner Implementation Guide, c) and/or use the PartnerSource Knowledgebase that has these and many, many, many more answers to your basic to very complicated questions.
If you _still_ can't figure it out, ask the question in either the reseller or the managed reseller group!
Rant off!

I do apologize for allowing my frustrations of finding solutions to be aired on this customer site. As I am sure we have all experienced, there are times when I am in a bind and reaching out for a solution in any area of Microsoft.
Unprofessional on my part and I will be more aware of my actions in the future.
I thank Glenn Adams very much for coming through with such a fine solution for me. Thanks alot Glenn.
And Jeff, you are correct in that - the resources are available through Microsoft - which is why I choose Microsoft. In Hawaii, we sometimes feel like we are on the edge of the earth when it comes to support with the time differences etc. Microsoft and its network of people who are associated with Microsoft (whether customer or reseller) is the one provider who we can depend upon.
I only have to remember how distraught I get when I read posts that are negative about RMS software and this will keep me and my opinions in check.
All software programs leave something to be desired to a particular user. but in general if 98% of the features and functions satisfy the application, you should be able to work around those few things that may seem so important at the time.
To all that log in here, you do such a good job supporting each other and that is what it is all about.
Jeff, if you knew me, you would buy from me because I as a reseller am so involved in helping my customers get things done without disrupting their normal day to day jobs. I feel that is my job to make this experience of implementing their point of sale system as easy and effortless as possible.
And no - I am not just a "rabble rouser" who is going to "rant off". What I am is a dedicated reseller with my customers' satisfaction as the main priority. Fortunately, Microsoft solutions have been the best solutions to meet this requirement.
Thanks all. I hope to be able to reciprocate with some little tip or trick I may have found.

Hi Rob. I thanked Glen for his solution but did not thank you for yours. Mahalo. You guys are great. This is why I go to this site for help! Cause you do! I have been in touch with Realm, Rite Label and NewWest Technology as well. Even 2B Inventory. Soon I won't have any more questions ever again - yeah right.
Thank you all. Unbelievable helpful. Very cool.
Its Aloha Friday. Everybody have a great weeked.

Jeff I just saw what you said to Roxanne.....awesome!! I wish I can say that to the RMS patner that sold me my stuff. I have had mine for a week now, and have not been able to use it. He was supposed to show me how to get the cash draw to kick, which he did not know what to do. Thanks to a guy named Brad and the guy from epson.
I can withhold the rest of his money (4000.00) until he does his job.
I have to go figure out how to see what i imported that is not showing up
Thanks for listen> Roxanne,

I just HAVE to respond to you, Country, and you again, Jeff. I hope you read my apology for my previous "rant" as I thought it quite covered MY frustration. And couldn't you see that I was in the same head as you and your frustration?
You know, as partners, we are trained in the standard installation and operation of this POS system. When it comes to the customization of the software or hardware, unless we have come up against a particular problem in our installations, we cannot possibly know it all. And I certainly never say that I know it all.
Basic issues such as kicking a cash drawer are answers that certainly should be available from your partner. Unless you are trying to use an existing cash drawer from a previous POS system and trying to make it work for Store Operations. Then it can be a real pain. And as the Microsoft tech told me when I was trying to help a customer out by using their existing OLD hardware, it NEVER would have opened. Buy a new compatible cash drawer. And we did.
You also must remember that every time we go to Microsoft with a question, even though we are selling and supporting their software, we get charged just like the end user customer.
So, cut us a break. We are not tech gurus who write code. But we are certainly trying to keep our customers happy. I find the guys on this website to be a God send as they have experience writing "triggers" and adding the jargon that is needed to make an "active report that shows profit margins". And other custom reports that a customer might need.
It would be nice there was a software product that does it all. But to my knowledge, it does not exist without a little bit of tweaking. And we often need to use all resources available to EVERYBODY to find out how to tweak a particular area for a particular customer.
I h> Jeff I just saw what you said to Roxanne.....awesome!!
