Can people afford a new car?
Will this increase the stockpile of new cars?
What benefit will this scheme bring - and how?
The streets round here are awash with cars with 'for sale' stickers attached and this is a very rural area. The very LAST thing the UK needs is more of the bloody things!
ISTM that if it doesn't bring any benefit, it won't cost anything. So whilst it isn't a win-win, it isn't a lose-lose either.

Few can without credit & therein lies the rub, not to mention the uncertain employment prospects are causing consumers to shy from such purcjases / commitments.
I don't believe it will,no.
It should allow UK based components manufacturers, in particular, to remain in business & (possibly) result in fewer redundancies in that sector than would otherwise been the case.
the UK manufacturing base was decimated under Thatcher in the early/mid
80's,since when the economy has come to rely increasing;y on the financial services sector. Now that's gone pear-shaped the Country is increasingly dependant & needs to support what little remains of ir's manufacturing base IMHO.
It doesn't quite square with the all their advice that we should cut down on car use; ease city traffic congestion; walk, cycle or use public transport; and substantially cut down on carbon emissions to save the planet. We have, of course, to keep driving and buying cars, otherwise they lose the car sales tax, vat, petrol duty, vehicle excise duty. insurance premium tax, etc, etc, etc, and our wee pretendy unelected prime minister doesn't have billions to waste, and can't fund his own credit bubble - all the schools hospitals etc, that, despite 10 years record tax income, he bought on tick.
