Grupo Santander shares

Better half has 131 ex-Abbey National shares. Better to sell or keep? Price seems virtually static (apart from sterling/euro fluctuations) since transfer. Free dealing offer runs out in May 2005.

I got rid of mine - the prospect of sorting out future spanish tax issues was too daunting. If you dump 'em now, they'll do the spanish tax return for you.

Yeah, that was our thinking. We probably will, after the February dividend payment.

The share price will generally go down after the dividend payment, probably by around the same amount as the dividend.

If you do get a foreign dividend, you have to declare this in a tax return to the inland revenue, as well as comply with any requirements that the spanish tax authorities impose on you.

The share price generally drops when the shares go 'ex-dividend', i.e. when the right to the dividend no longer accrues to the registered shareholder, and not when a dividend is paid, so you need to check the 'ex-dividend' date. The results are due on 25 February and the 'ex-divi' date will be some time after that.
