P45U / P46

When you are starting a new job, can you ask for a P46 rather than give them the P45U?

And is it easier to send the P45U to the IR for them to deal with or deal with the employer directly with the P46?

What is the difference between the two forms anyhow?

[Yes, I do not want the new employer to see I have claimed JobSeekers benefit!]

Thanks.

Yes

You have to do both if you go down this route.

The P45 gives details of your earnings, tax paid and tax code. The P46 does not.

If you hand over a P45, you will generally get the correct amount of tax deducted. With a P46, you will be put on an emergency code which will usually mean a higher tax bill.

Yes, but how long would it take to get the tax paid back to you?

You may be able to get the tax code corrected by your March salary. I'd give the IR a couple of weeks and then ask your emploers for their PAYE reference and then you should call the tax office and quite the reference and your NI number.

Look the office up using the 3 digit reference at the start of the PAYE reference using the link below
