Historical Sterling to Euro Exchange Rates 1991-1995

Dear All,

I am looking to create a list of 'working assumption' exchange rates from Sterling to Euro for the years 1991- 1995 inclusive.

This is not my field, but I do know that History is working against me in this endeavour since Sterling-Euro rates aren't available for this era.

does not have rates going this far back.

does. I don't know how these rates are derived and cannot find an explanation for these on the x-rates website.

If someone could please point to a method for deriving these rates or a reliable source to look them up I would me most grateful.

Many thanks in advance.

The Euro didn't exist in 1991. The DM was generally considered the reference rate for the EU in those days, so you could find the official ?/DM conversion rate, and get historical rates for £/DM.

There was something called the ECU, which was made up of some sort of weighted average of the EU currencies.

Mainly because the euro didn't exist! However, there was a synthetic currency called the ecu (european currency unit) which is probably about the best you can do, and I would think there are rates for that around somewhere. I have a vague memory that the ecu currency symbol was XEU, but I could be totally wrong.

I wasn't very clear in my original post: I know the Euro didn't exist prior to 1999.

I was specifically looking for a synthetic Euro rate to support an IT project. I'm going for the ECU rate, and assuming that the

rates are for the ECU (they look about right).

Thanks for your help!
