How long is a UK Cheque 'valid'? - **Answer**

Jan 12, 2005 3 Replies

I recently asked this group for an opinion as to how long a UK cheque was valid.

As a result of feedback, I asked my bank for clarification.

My bank responded by saying that they reviewed their terms & conditions and enclosed a copy for me (I cannot recall seeing these before and I was surprised that they had to review them themselves).

The highlighted paragraph reads:

"We may pay a cheque even if it is not presented to us for payment within six months of the date on the cheque. We reserve the right to return unpaid any such cheque but you must give us instructions to stop payment of the original cheque if you issue a duplicate.".

Thank you to those who provided feedback.

For the sake of completeness, which bank was it?

I thought about naming and then didn't but now that I've been asked - Barclays.

Any idea what it says about cashing cheques presented after the account's closed? I'm just being lazy ;-)
