how to cash a cheque in the U.K. thats in U.S. dollars.

Hi,

I am at present here in the U.K. Would you kindly tell me if a cheque for 20 U.S. dollars given by an american hotel to myself, can be endorsed by my signing on the back, and then paying it in to my friends account, which is at an american bank, please? Since I do not myself have an account myself at an American Bank.

My own bank in the U.K. wants a 10 as a 'transaction charge', and told me there could be other charges as well, so for a $20 dollar cheque they said it was best to just forget it, since this check is not in U.K. pounds, but is in dollars.

Thanking you for any assistance, or advice on the best way to cash this cheque.

I've just received HSBC's tariff for international payments.

For clearing cheques under £100 the fee is £5. This comes into force from 1 June 2004.

Prob worth framing it instead of cashing it.

Some places charge £5, one place nothing but can't remember who that is.

Odd my mother received some strange cheque (about AUS 17) from some Australian lottery which she had never entered, but her bank (TSB Lloyds) took it without a quibble and no charges.
