I'm just double-checking that passing on the IBAN and my account number to an EBAY buyer is completely safe.
The girl at the counter at my bank said there as no problem. Can somone please confirm this. Thanks.

Of course it's safe. It's as safe as sending someone a cheque, which of course also has your branch code and account number on it.
Okay. It's just that IBAN thing that's got me going. :c)
and how do you know someone on Usenet is telling the truth if you won't believe a bank?
just curious :-)
The IBAN *is* your Bank Account Number, that's what BAN stands for, and the I is just for International.
If you look closely at your IBAN it will probably begin with GB and be followed by 6 characters which identify your bank (the first 8 characters of my IBAN are GB97 RBOS). The rest of the IBAN just consists of the UK branch sort code with the hyphens taken out (6 characters) followed by the ordinary account number (8 characters).
I'm not sure what the point of the BIC is, though. It seems to be an additional (redundant?) bank identifier. Mine's RBOS GB 2L. I don't know what the 2L in the BIC tells you that the 97 in the IBAN doesn't.
