Implications of obtaining personal information

Hi, a friend of mine recently recieved a phone call from an individual claiming to be calling on BT behalf. He said that she was due to recieve £15 in credit for having paid her phone bill on time for last twelve months and asked for personal information such as her name, address, postcode, DOB and bank account number. She's told the bank who closed her account immediately but is worried about the implications of someone having such personal information.

Has anyone had any experience of having had their identity stolen and know which authorities should be informed?

Thanks,

Nick

No personal experience, but someone else posted about receiving a similar call a few days ago. Presumably it would be in the banks interest to inform the authorities on your friends behalf, so she should ask the bank, and if they've done nothing launch a complaint. She could ask BT to trace the call.

Thanks for the reply - she's already reported it to the bank and she followed my advice and made a statement at the police station to cover herself in case her information used to obtain credit or a passport etc...
