Import Duty

As posted on 20th Oct, My wife is the process of importing some samples from the USA which a approximately value 300.00 to try out. I asked what duty/tax implications are there.

Very kindly people replied and supplied information on obtaining classification codes and where to obtain the duty.

Now that she has this information, she has contacted the overseas supplier asking them if they require the classifications codes, so when the goods arrive at their destinations, customs can apply the relevant duty on the type of items.

The supplier in the USA, has said they will box all the them items together and supply some form of paper work detailing the number of items and the description.

Some items have a duty of 3.2% and some with duty of 14.5%, so what is the process then the goods reach the UK customs, will they look at the paperwork supplied and work out the classifications? She is worried that they may just browse through the paperwork classify all items as one type and apply a higher duty.

Please advise

Thanks for reading the post.

I assume the samples are commercial samples, brought in for business purposes.

It's up to the importer of record (i.e. You !!) to supply the customs with the appropriate paperwork. I assume the goods will come in by airfreight? If so, appoint a clearance agent at the airport, and supply him with a copy of the invoice, making sure each different item is listed together with it's value. Then give him the tariff codes applying to each item. He will then prepare the entry and advise you of the the duty (and VAT) applicable. You then pay this to him or customs with the entry.

Appointing a clearance agent at the airport, how much does that cost approximately?

It's only a few boxes to clear not a container, well not yet.

Thank you

The clearance agent does not need to physically be at the airport. You will have to negotiate that. Welcome to the world of business. Explain to them that's its a sample, and if the business goes will you may need his services in future, also ring around.

Contact British International Freight Association (includes the Institute of Freight Forwarders) for a list of their members

A customs clearance will typically cost between 30-50 as a one-off, depends how many tariff headings are involved. If it's coming by air, try to speak to the airline involved and get their recommended agents, it make life easier.

If the invoice is under ?10 in can be waived. Also the good may be applicable to Temporary Importation Relief (TI).

Best to ask an agent or phone 0845 010 9000
