Import duty on spirits

Sep 05, 2004 3 Replies

Hi,

I'm considering importing wines and spirits from countries outside the EU to the UK, for resale here in the UK. I was wonder what import duty and possibly VAT is payable on the import of such goods, and also if the process becomes any simpler or less costly if I import wines and spirits from countries inside the EU? Thanks.

Kind Regards, Shane Cook.

There is no 'import duty' within the EU, but there is an excise tax on things like cigarettes and wine & spirits.

The last time I checked, it was roughly £1.50 for a bottle of wine, and £7.50 for a bottle of spirits.

The hmce web site is probably a good place to start.
