Import taxes, duties etc. Calculating?

I wish to import some electronic goods in to the UK from the Far East. The company will be charging me in US Dollars for the goods and shipping.

Q1 Is there a definitive website anywhere which explains the likely charges etc loaded on to my goods before I can have them?

Q2 Before I visit any website, can anyone give a basic round up. For example Goods cost + 17.5%vat + hit or miss tax + clearance through customs and so on.

Sorry the above is a bit 'woolly' but I really do need some guidance before I vaguely know what its all about.

Thanks in advance.

Phone HM Customs & Excise and ask them.

Basically, Goods cost, plus postage, plus % duty, plus 17.5% vat - in that order. The courier will probably also charge you an administration fee.

The % duty figure is probably around 4- 5%.

That can vary quite widely. ISTR Royal Mail being the cheapest at a few pounds. Couriers £10 -£15, a freight forwarding agent at an air/sea port £25 +
