Inland Revenue problem

I lost my mother over 6 months ago, and I am the Executor of her estate. I did all the administration work myself, and about 6 weeks ago paid the Inalnd Revenue a hefty chunk of IHT, a figure which they had agreed with me just beforehand.

Since then, I have not been able to obtain Probate, because the IR have failed to inform the Probate office that the IHT has been paid, something which I understand they are obliged to do. I have written to them once in the interim, but so far they have not responded and the Probate office still have not been informed. Meanwhile I'm losing money having to pay out of my own pocket for all the bills running my late mother's house as well as interest incurred on an overdraft which has resulted because of this situation.

Can anyone advise me what I ought to do, and do I have any legal comeback on the IR?

Many thanks.

The Inland Revenue are very bad at reading letters. Phone them and when you get through to the right person fax them a copy of the letter.

Ask them to reimburse any costs you have incurred because of their normal level of incompetence.
