That's leaving it a bit tight isn't it. Suppose it's down on Monday as well? __ Richard Buttrey Grappenhall, Cheshire, UK __________________________

its not going to be my fault I couldn't submit it then, is it. So they can take a walk.

You're brave...aren't you? Either that, or stupid.

It's the government - do you honestly thin you can force them to take a walk? Next you'll be saying that you'll be getting Watchdog onto them to shame them into a climbdown. ;)

they have backed down on several consecutive years because their software does not correctly handle pension contribution carry forward / carry back. This led them to say I had underpaid, send me an excess charge and start charging interest, and send increasingly hysterical letters. In due course they had to eat their words, not least because in one case the online SA submission software agreed with my calcs but the money received checker had a different opinion.

The Govt is not above the law. If I took my tax return to the office and it was closed and had taped up its letterbox I am sure a court would hold that I had taken all reasonable steps to comply with the requirement to deliver it.

The law does not require me to submit a tax return today, or before today. The date is tomorrow.

Will we still get fined??

As I submitted it 'Over The Net' last Year I didn't get any paperwork, so I cant submit a hard copy if its still t*ts-up tomorrow

Just a thought but you could download and print one from the IR website, just search for SA100. Then all you need to do is hand it in at a tax office on Monday.

Thanks Downloaded & Printed SA100 & SA103

Still getting Online Service Temporarily Unavailable We are sorry but the service is currently unavailable due to maintenance or because we are updating the site.

We apologise for any inconvenience that this may cause.

Please try again later.

If that is true then the person authorising said maintenance or update needs to have a LART applied with great force. Just before the deadline for submissions is a very inappropriate time to perform maintenance or upgrades. If not, then someone should be held to account for giving out false information.

FWIW...this has just been reported on Breakfast news.

Lots of people have been affected by this BUT the IR's view is that people will still be fined for late submission as they shouldn't have left it until the last minute.

Methinks Gordon's purse is a little empty and he engineered this situation to boost his coffers using a soft target, as he always does (who, other than those who are actually fined, is going to mourn the charging of a £100 fine to someone who couldn't be bothered to submit their return until the very last minute?). Who remembers windfall tax and the pensions raids during a period of high stockmarket growth?

Does that last line suggest they are waiving the deadline?!

No they are most definitely not waiving it - at least that is their current stance, as reported on BBC Breakfast:

:-( So what's the point in "try[ing] again later" when you've had to hand-deliver a paper return instead? :-(

Their error message really should be worded better ...

I imagine their website error message is not time-dependent. i.e. it doesn't know (or even care) that it's the last day for submissions.

Any difficulties that people are having filing online is purely due to high levels of internet traffic, they just need to keep on trying,

This is technical bullshit. It's not the internet, it's the IR's server, which isn't up to thousands of people accessing it at the same time.

Mine apparently submitted at 01:00 on 30 Jan. Receipt confirmed by an e-mail dated 31 Jan, 07:11.

The Late Filing Penalty for individuals is not 100.

It is the lower of 100 or the amount due to the IR.

If nothing is due to the IR, then the penalty is NIL.

Without a hint of irony, "Doug Ramage" astounded uk.finance on 31 Jan 2005 by announcing:

Indeed. The advice from a PWC rep on R4 this morning was to pay what you owe and you'll not be subject to the fine.
