Inland Revenue Call Centre

Oct 02, 2003 3 Replies

Yesterday I spoke to someone at the contact centre who told me I cannot get a refund of tax overpaid in 1998 as the inland revenue only repay within the last 3 years, I spoke to a friend who's an accountant he advised that it is up to 6 years. When I called in to my local tax office they confirmed 6 years.

Has any one else had misinformation from these guys?

Possibly confusing the time limit with VAT?

I've talked to people on the VAT helpline who didn't have a clue about the surcharge rules although they are on the back of the yellow surcharge notices.

Sadly those who answer the phones at IR offices are not always the most switched on.
