This is for Euro to Euro transfers only.

You don't qualify at either end.

I would like to send 500 to Poland. I have heard tell nowadays that for international transfers, there is a law that states that they must be able to be done at domestic rates (This particular law can be found at

(watch the wrap) (less than a couple of quid) if the destination country is in the EU. I have a friend who banks at Natwest and they quoted 25. I have accounts at Barclays (30) and Lloyds TSB (5.50). Surely domestic transfer rates are cheaper than this? I enquired as to the fact, and each bank said that that was the way they did things. The Lloyds rate is not to bad, but if it can be had for cheaper, all the better.

The laws are one thing, what happens is another. You will be able to find the charges levied at this end (don't forget the exchange rate includes an implicit charge) but it is possible there will be some charges on collection of the funds..

A key fact in determining which method to use is what facilities your friend in Poland has. An HSBC account would suggest that HSBC might be the best bet. No bank account in Poland and Western Union might be preferable.

You should also think hard about sending anything valuable through the post. I doubt the postal service in Poland is as reliable as it is here. In countries I've known, anything that looks interesting is pocketed by postal workers.

30? Can't you get an Easyjet flight to Warsaw for that? :-))))
