Wire transfer issues...

Recently did a wire transfer of STG to Poland. Lloyds TSB Bank originally said fees would be 5.50. Then next day changed their minds and said that they couldn't send "economy" to Poland as it wasn't on their "list". Accepted that, and ended up paying 13 fees instead. They asked if I wanted to send in STG and have the Polish bank convert it, or convert it to Zloty at the Lloyds side and have it sent that way. They said the Polish bank would add a fee if they had to convert STG and there would be no extra fees if I sent in Zloty, so chose the second option. Now got a letter advising of the breakdown, and turns out there was a fee levied by the Polish Bank. It wasn't a large charge, but a charge nonetheless. Possible to claim back from Lloyds, as they said there wouldn't be any extra charge, or will they get difficult?

read the terms and conditions on back of your copy of the transfer? Once the payment leaves LloydsTsb it has no control over whether any correspondent Bank charges or not. Eric

By the sounds of it Lloyds were saying that if you had sent Sterling the Polish bank would have charged to convert to Zloty. This doesn't necessarily mean that the Polish bank would not charge at all.

Lloyds probably should have been more specific about what sort of charges you could incur at the other end as the SWIFT system allows for sender to pay charges at both ends of the transaction (thereby knowing with certainty what the recipient will receive).

Did you keep a copy of the transfer order form?

You had the choice between paying all the fees to Lloyds Bank, and the recipient getting the cash with no further charge, or paying part of the fees to Lloyds Bank, and the recipient paying conversion fees to the Polish Bank.

You have paid the fee for conversion into Zloty, as the bank proposed. What's the problem in that?
