Just been approved..

I've got a approval notice in the post from Capital One this morning.

How long will it take for them to process the card and send it out?

Will it be sent by standard mail (where it 'might' get nicked by the postman) or by Special Delivery/Courier?

It will come by Royal Mail, but will need to be activated by calling Capital One and answering security questions over the phone.

Well, in that post office employees are still, virtually, government employees, they are above suspicion, in that they work more for love of the job than the money. On the other hand, if it is a wicked capitalistic money grabbing shareholder owned organisation, such as a courier company, then their employees won't give a toss.

Either way the card may or may not turn up - probably the latter if you're in a desperate hurry for it.

You will speak to a human (Who will try to sell you a payment protection plan, too, btw)

Is the activation of the card an automated system or do you have to speak to someone?!

(forgive me as this is the first new credit card I've applyed for in over 10 years!)

Don't worry about it. It's not a test you pass/fail.

It's just so they can make sure that you've received the card before then allow it to be used.

You will get the card. There will be a sticker on the front telling you to call a number. You call that number. You might get an automatic system asking you to type in the card number and maybe the three digits on the back on the signature strip. Then you'll probably be transferred to a person (assuming that the person didn't ask you for the card number as well) and they'll probably ask for your DoB, maybe the start date on the card, confirm your address and then the card will be activated. (They'll probably also ask you to confirm that you've signed the back of the card, so do that before you call them)

If the card doesn't turn up (or you lose it[1]) then you call them, tell them it's lost/missing and they'll put a stop on the card and send you a new one which you will probably get within 3 days of you calling them and then you'll activate it.

Even if you can't answer one of the questions they ask you it doesn't really matter. I forgot my telephone banking code once and it had to be reset. Then I got a call which took me through a list of questions, one or two of which I didn't know/couldn't remember. One of the questions was what what month I'd bought my house. I said I couldn't remember but I thought it was October and I could go and look it up if they wanted. They say, no, no need, and after a few more questions said they were happy that I was who I said I was and let me change my code. Afterwards I did go and lookup when I bought my house, and it wasn't October at all - that was when I'd changed jobs that necessitated me getting a new house - but other than maybe I got asked a few more questions than is usual, there was no issue and they didn't even say I'd got the answer wrong.

Tim.

[1] I lost a card once between calling to activate it and putting it in my wallet. I have absolutely no idea what I can have done with it - I can only assume that I destroyed it along with the old card as it has never turned up
