Ltd Company Formation & Banking Advice

Hi,

I was made redundant last year, and I'm just about ready now to set up on my own as a small computer consultancy (only me as staff initially, although my girlfriend can act as a director or secretary as necessary).

I'd like any suggestions on where to form my company (online and for a good price would be preferred).

Specifically, I have the following requirements:

- I'd like a Ltd company with a London registered address.

- I'd maybe like to be able to use the same company shell for a second business in a few months (an online shop selling toy collectables).

- I need a company credit card and bank account (although I don't want to pay prohibitive charges). Or can I just use one of my personal credit cards and bank accounts (as long as I only use it for the company).

- I will probably do my own accountancy.

Any advice you can offer?

Thanks,

Fred.

I don't think it matters that much who you use, it's a pretty simple transaction forming a company. If you decide you need an accountant then it may well make sense to get the accountant to do it for you, it gives them a sort of interest in you to start with.

Why?

If you live in London yourself you can use your own address, or your accountant may be happy to be the registered office.

No problem, just make sure the businesses specified in the company set up are made wide enough to include anything you may want to do. I think mine specifies a sort of 'catch all' at the end which basically says 'anything that will make a profit'.

Abbey National Business provide free Ltd. company banking for up to soemthing like 40 transactions per month. You get a Visa debit card with the account.

I just use a personal credit card dedicated to company use as a 'company' credit card. You don't really even need to use it only for the company, just keep good records of which purchases are company purchases and reimburse yourself for those. A separate card does make things easier to manage though.

I do most of the day to day stuff myself (PAYE, VAT and the basic ledgers and analysis), my accountant produces year end accounts and deals with all our tax returns.

Why? Do you live in London?

That isn't a problem.

You won't get a company credit card to start off with, as the company won't have a credit history.

You should have a company bank account. A personal credit card is fine.

Don't try any do your own accountancy unless you are an accountant.
