I look after the payroll of a small limited company. We hired a Russian lady who is married to a British citizen. She was granted a right to work in the UK and allocated a NI number which is in a different format to the standard UK format of two letters followed by
6 numerals followed by a single letter, A, B, C or D. (LL NN NN NN L) This lady's number is in the format two numerals, a letter and five numerals (NN LN NN NN).The problem I have is that my payroll software will not accept this as a valid number. The NI Registrations helpline at HMRC don't recognise it either although it was issued by one of their offices.
This is causing me quite a headache; has anyone any idea of a resolution?
