National Insurance Number

I look after the payroll of a small limited company. We hired a Russian lady who is married to a British citizen. She was granted a right to work in the UK and allocated a NI number which is in a different format to the standard UK format of two letters followed by

6 numerals followed by a single letter, A, B, C or D. (LL NN NN NN L) This lady's number is in the format two numerals, a letter and five numerals (NN LN NN NN).

The problem I have is that my payroll software will not accept this as a valid number. The NI Registrations helpline at HMRC don't recognise it either although it was issued by one of their offices.

This is causing me quite a headache; has anyone any idea of a resolution?

She got a temporary emergency NI number..... I think she would be entitled for a permanent one.

Emergency numbers used to be the person's birthday/month/year

I was under the impression that a temporary number was in the form TN M/F (depending upon whether the person is male or female), to match the standard format.

Speak to someone in the company that isn't as thick as you make yourself look! Speak to HMRC and they will give you advice.

Perfectly OK to ask HMRC questions like "what about this silly number", "can you send more forms" etc.

OTOH questions like "is this expense payment declarable and chargeable to tax?" is likely to get the wrong answer and lead to considerable [unnecessary] compliance load, hassle and expense.

The DWP issue NINO`s not HMRC. I think the format you have stated is more for PAYE purpose as the computer system will allocate a temporary reference under which to hold the record until one is allocated. She will have to approach the DWP if not already but don`t know about the payroll problem. I don`t think the NI Registration have any connection with these formats hence not recognising it.
