Gross interest without a National Insurance number

I sent a form R105 to ING Direct to register for gross interest, as I am a student not ordinarily resident in the UK. They refused it saying they were not required to accept form R105s.

So I sent in an R85, but they refused it because I don't have a National Insurance number. Since I'm not working I have been told it is difficult to get one.

HMCR Self-Assessment Helpline says that my only real option is to claim the tax back from HMCR. Is this correct? The procedure for that seems like a confusing pain, and might not even be worth what little money I'd get back.

Thanks for any help.

I believe what you have been told is correct. You could always pay to send your savings home if it is too problematic for you to pay tax on it here. Eric
