Very comfortably, I would think, but to keep my brain busy and use my experience I would want a consultative position with the company, preferably not in America.

1) As he's worked for the company for 28 years to reach the position he did he must have done something right. Why is it wrong to reward him for that? 2) Whilst his PR skills might have been lacking ISTM that the original problem was not of his making. Why should he be punished for that mistake while the actual culprit gets off scott free?

A great post appeared on a beeb comment site last night - supported by (I estimate) 80% of the subsequent comments...

" The amount of crap Hayward has had to put up with from the US, the US media and Obama, is virtually priceless; especially considering the involvement of Halliburton and Transocean have been largely ignored.

But a near $1 million a year pension should be enough to annoy the US suitably. And I'm glad.

David Cameron has shown virtually no backbone is standing up to the US on behalf of the UK over this, so this pension is the only thing we've got left to stick it to the US.

A shame it wasn't $2 million a year, really. "

Sums it all up brilliantly. There is no "special relationship" - the yanks stuff everyone equally.

"tim...." gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying:

And why aren't BP's PR people being sacked left, right and centre?

I agree, his only mistake was he wasn't prepared to humour the media, which is essential in the US, he was there to take care of the "nitty gritty".

BP are only carrying the can because they have the license for deep drilling in the Bay. The rig, and the emergency stop valve on the rig were TransOceanic and another company's.

I would think that the personnel were almost all American.

Sorry maty but the TOP man is there to take the good with the bad.

Personally I think his biggest mistake was having that webcam pointed at the leaking pipe 24 * 7. Without that, all the yanks would have seen would be some patches of oil on the surface of the sea.
