My wife bought some shares a long time ago that are in her maiden name and she has also moved house since. What's the normal protocol for updating the details on the share certificate before she can sell them? She can't remember where she bought them from, but is that important when she comes to sell them?

The certificates will have the address of the registrars on them. Contact them.
