Open Account in UK on tourist or business visa

Hi, I often visit UK for large purchases and even have rented a house recently. The problem is that no one accepts cash and it is a big hassle to pay suppliers, transporters, freight companies and whole host of other companies. I lose a bundle in just fees and exchange losses and am not able to get competitive rates. I visited one bank and they refused to open the account. I was wondering if this was specific to this branch or is there some flexibility in this with other banks. I have utility bills in my names though not for long. I'm usually visiting UK on visitor visa, will it help if I went on business visa. Thanks, Regards, JIm

The big banks in the UK routinely open accounts for non-residents. Eg

(This is not a recommendation of them over others.) You don't say why the bank you visited declined to do so. But in my (admittedly limited) experience you *don't* need to pay one of the agents who claim it is terribly difficult but they will sell you the book with the secret.....

If you have a utility bill in your name and a passport and claim to be UK resident (ie lie if needs be) then it should be possible to open any account either in branch or on line. It is the proof of address that normally causes problems.
