OT: Car insurance question

Not quite a finance thing, but I know there are lots of knowledgeable people in here...

I was due to buy a car today but my insurance provider for my current car has failed to get the cover note to me in time. The transfer was scheduled to happen at midday, so now I have a problem that I can't complete the deal because with no cover note, the garage I am buying from can't get the tax disc. As the transfer of the insurance will take a midday day, I won't have insurance on my current car.

I'm wondering if I can get around this issue by going to a local broker in the town I live and ask if I can have car insurance cover for just one day, and they can issue me with a cover note, which I can then give to the garage so they can get the tax disc.

Does anybody know if this is possible?

the garage should have their own cover note they can get the tax with. If you leave it till Wednesday you can save a months tax of course.
