I am having an item delivered from the USA by airmail but the sender says that the maximum insurance cover offered by the carrier is about 900 short of the value of the item.
Is there some service in the UK which would offer insurance to cover the item in transit?

use a different carrier! If they cant get insurance for their service, why would anyone else insure them?
