Putting note on credit record

Nov 08, 2005 10 Replies

Hi. I have a vague memory somewhere that I can get a note put on my credit report or similar that means that if anyone attempted to take out a loan in my name some additional check would be made. Or some vaguely similar thing I can do to make it less likely that I could be a victim of identity fraud.

Any hints?

Experian offer a service where they email you if your credit record changed during the week.

Forgot to say, some disagree with the usefulness of this service, and I am merely telling you that the service exists not endorsing it.

It costs about £6 a month.

Nah - it's only just over 4 per month!

You can add a "Notice of Correction" to your file. This is viewable by anyone making a search of your file. However, it is not always even checked, let alone acted upon.

I think you are looking for a CIFAS referral. You have to have been a victim, or attempted victim, of identity fraud to get this. What it means is that all the agencies (experian etc) put a CIFAS warning on your record, and then the lender has to go through another set of hoops and checks, which involves a direct call from CIFAS or representative to yourself and/or your employer to verify the data given. It's free, but only if you've been a victim. You have to request the company that made the initial (fraudulent) search to make the CIFAS referral.

You need someone to steal your identity. ;-) That happened to me, and although it didn't cost me anything, it put a marker on my credit record for twelve months. It was reassuring and annoying at the same time, because when I went to buy a PC on a "0% finance for one year" deal they would not allow me the instant credit, although they would have delivered the PC to me a few days later. I used my credit card and took the PC away with me, losing the BNPL deal.

Thanks for all the replies. It was the CIFAS referral I was thinking of, but I have not been the victim of identity fraud, and hence can't get one. I never buy things on credit apart from normal use of a credit card, paid in full each month. So, I thought I would only gain by putting such a marker on my record. But, if it can't be done, it can't be done.

BNPL offers aren't of interest to me. I believe that the fundamental theory of BNPL is that consumers will forget about the lump sum to be paid later and pay a whole lot of interest on the full sum. I think that would be a realistic model of my likely behaviour.

The service offered by Experian is sort of interesting, but not quite enough for me to go for it. It would be cheaper for me to order my credit report every three weeks or so.

They use Equifax to manage the service which puts a CIFAS registration on your credit record.

I have one, and a mortgage lender called me yesterday to make some additional checks, so it seems to work.

No you dont - you can be merely worried that it might have happened.

It can be done - I've done it

I was concerned that some post had been removed from my letterbox, and that was enough for them.

Having said that - I applied for it in May, and it only went on my record in September.
