RESIDENTIAL MORTGAGE FOR BRITISH CITIZEN HUBBY and African Wife

Hi Folks,

I need some help. Ii am a british citizen and my wife is from Africa. She has only been in the UK since August 2006. She currently have not job, though she is doing her best to get one. I have 2 jobs and we want to get a mortgage.

Is is possible for this mortgage to be in joint name ? Bearing in mind that my wife has only been in the UK for 6months? I know lenders does have requirement concerning how long you have been resident in the country.

Also would you advise I take the mortgage in my sole name? If so can i add her name at anytime in the future? If yes how?

Please I need advise on this as this is a big issue currently round my end.

Thanks

IANAL or financial whiz

This is definitely the option i'd take at this stage !

ISTR there was a post in uk.legal about 3 months ago from a friend of someone in similar circumstances - the wife had buggered off and left them in a difficult situation.

Your wife may still have some right to a share of the property in the event of a divorce, but keeping it in your name might make it harder for someone trying to fleece you.

How long have you been married ?

You have not read the question properly, you are on the wrong track. The OP didn't mention anything about a divorce.

I know - if you read my reply I said in the event of a divorce.

The post I referred to was where someone had been left by their foreign wife, so seemed relevant.

I know off the top of my head that Northern Rock will do this, but check out others (use an adviser, let them do the running around speaking with companies), as Northern Rock have relatively high valuation and arrangement fees.
