so annoying

When large financial institutions whom I have done business with for years refuse to give me a reference. My mortgage company overseas wants 4 references from banks, credit card companies and utility companies I have done business with over the years.

A simple letter stating how long I have been a customer and that payments have been received in a full and timely manner seems too much for them. Assholes. Two obliged and will keep my business, screw the rest.

Dont blame them, blame the litigious recipients who subsequently sue when you default.

How could they sue if all the bank has done was state facts? Eg he has always paid his credit card on time, he has never exceeded his overdraft limit, etc. If they just write things like that, assuming they are true, what possible grounds could anyone have for suing, whatever subsequently happens? I don't think he was after the bank stating "he will never default".

It is an onerous task for the bank to research its records and then make the statement that you want them to make. They wont do this without a substantial payment to cover there costs in researching their answer and they certainly wont take the risk of doing so and then finding out they made a minor mistake which then makes them negligent for a potentially limitless sum. There is some very considerable case law and banking practice on this, the result of which is that any form of professional reference is, nowadays, avoided at all costs.

AS I have already said, it isnt the banks who are at fault, but the litigious sods who ask for references and then sue.
