Is there any way I can find out the bank name and branch from a sort code or vice versa - that is can one select a bank and branch and find the sort code - ideally online? Thanks.

I did. It's all commercial for commercial institutions.

One favourite method of mine is to go into my bank's online service, and set up a new payee with that sort code. In the process, the service obligingly provides me with the sort code's bank and branch information. Then I cancel at the final stage, all information gathered.

I fed in:

"56 00 49" "sort code"

and it gave me loads of results saying NatWest Bank, 59 High Street, Exeter EX4

3DJ, so it should work with other sort codes as well

yep works same for my bank (barclays) as well.

Worked for me with a Barclays one, 20 12 75 but not with a Halifax one 11 00

And, if it is the sorting code of a branch that you need to find, but know the address, then its useless.
