NI number and banks.

Just read a bank account form for a personal account. It asks my National Insurance number. Firstly, why do they need this since most accounts don't ask for it, and secondly, can they actually check and if so who with, since it's not listed on the credit file.

Thanks.

Can only presume it is there because if you are applying for an ISA, either now or in the future, the bank needs to provide the details of NI Nos to ensure people don't have more than one in a tax yr. Other than that, poss tax evasion detection?

Without a hint of irony, " snipped-for-privacy@talktalk.net" astounded uk.finance on 26 Jan 2005 by announcing:

Money laundering?

Tax Evasion is, naturally, a financial crime but has to be very evolved to be realistically considered money laundering.

I fail to see how the retention of an NI no can prevent against 'money laundering' itself, however.
