Student Accounts

Eldest son is starting University in September. He has got the letter from Student Finance England asking for his bank account details so they can be ready to pay money in. However, when can he open a student account? From the websites it would appear that he needs to wait until the end of August when he gets his results and an offer ( and the latest deals are out). Would it be best to open a normal account now and change then, or is it normal to open an account where the student deals kick in when the offer is received (and shown to the bank)? TIA

Surely the physical location if the branch is now almost irrelevant. My mother, who now lives near me in Hampshire, keeps her account at her old (Lloyds) branch 100 miles away. The admin appears to be handled in South Wales. I administer my old uncle's affairs from here, whereas his (Halifax) branch is in Gloucester. Since everything now seems to be centralised, if not jobbed out to Bangalore or worse, why not simply open an account where you are - and let the bank sort out how it wants to handle it when you know to which university he's going?

AFAIK you can open a "Student" account when you are 18. Unless he is born in August then he should be able to open it now.

The best thing would be to phone around the banks and ask them.
