New Current Account - Can't get one!

I have a frience who's son who lives at the same house has alot of debt (serious debt). My friend's wages go into his wife's account and there are no bills in his name. All he has is a joint savings account with his wife. He has tried lots and lots and banks and they have refused to open a current account for him.

He gets paid regularly (monthly) by the Local Authority, surely this would account for something!

If anyone has any ideas on who/how he can get a current account I would love to know.

TIA

Your Friend's son could ask for a Basic Bank account, which he should be eligible for as long as he can prove his identity. The problem will be getting any form of credit on his account, given the property. However, unless the debt is in his name or someone he is linked to, he should not be impacted

My firend has checked with experion but there is nothing on his name, i think they said it is by association (his son wh is debt).

My friend can prove his identity via driving licence, birth cert etc, but has no utility bills in his name - not even mobile phone - that's in his wifes name.

I think it's the friend who wants an account, not the friend's son.

You can write to both the main credit check companies and ask to be dis-assosciated from the person who has the debts. That way any credit checks will exclude the debtor person.

In the mean time a basic nationwide account will give full internet banking with an atm card. To go with this a prepaid credit card will allow purchases by mastercard at shops on the net etc etc. Cashplus is one such card.

Get his wife to add him as a joint holder of the current current account.

Then she can open another if she wants to.

I think I will tell him to see nationwide, he would like an account of his own, his wife spends all the money... he wants to break away!

Thanks to everyone who gave help, it was all helpful

One thing to watch for bev is that although all the banks should offer a basic account like the nationwide one i mentioned they dont all offer the same. Natwest says it has internet banking but in practice you can only view the account not make transactions like you can with nationwide so the natwest offering is useless.
