Surprised by home insurance premium rise

Sep 01, 2006 6 Replies

Prudential has just sent me a renewal notice for my home building and contents insurance policy. The new premium is 15 percent more than last year's although I have not made any claims the past five years. Is this increase more or less normal among insurers these days? TIA.

No increase in renewal rates noted amongst our friends and family this year.

But I did notice a report in another news group of similar increases in car insurance premiums.

I can remember when the discount insurers came on the scene my car insurance going down from over £900 (Norwich Union) to £ 320 (Direct line) since then I've got it even cheap[er than Direct Line with Churchill.

I hope the "Hey Days" of cheap insurance aren't coming to an end.

Shop around. Insurance companies will screw you if you stay with them more than two years.

Complain and they'll reduce it.

True.

For the last couple of years, I've been switching home and car insurance between the two companies that have the lowest permiums.

Strangely, they are esure and Halifax; each year, they swap round, with one beating the other's renewal for my car insurance, but loosing the home policy...

We had a biggish claim (15K) four years and found it difficult to get building insurance the next year. More Than had a big advertising campaign at the time and took us for less than we had been paying with our earlier insurer. The premiums have not gone up overmuch since we joined them. After this year we can look around again a it seems that is the period that you remain a leper after making any claim over 7K. Derek.
