tax credit reclaim?

Hello

I live in Canada and inherited some shares (Abbey National and Centrica).Ihave received over the past 10 years a number of dividend payments which have had tax withheld from the dividend payment. The amount withheld is indicated on the dividend statement as a tax credit This is correct Ibelieve? Where it says tax credit this is the amount withheld?

Ihave saved the tax vouchers and have quite a few of them but as the amount was relatively small I have not done anything about them

I learnt recently that I might be able to claim back the amounts withheld from the Inland Revenue but I am a bit out of touch with the procedures in the UK. Its easy enough to phone but who do Icall? Or is there some way I can get more information about how to go about this?

Thanks for your time

Michael

Yes..

Until a couple of years ago, non-taxpayers could reclaim the tax credit - but they stopped this a few years ago (in 1999)

Normally, the Inland Revenue will process refunds up to 6 years after the end of the UK tax year - so if you were living in the UK you could still have reclaimed the tax credit for the years before the rules were changed - i.e. paid before 6 April 1999 but which fall within the "6 year" rule.

However, as you live in Canada...

You will find that the UK and Canada have a "double taxation" agreement and that you should probably actually be declaring your dividend payments to the Canadian tax authorities - who would then offset the tax collected in the UK, against your taxes due there..

For the UK point of view (and who to contact in the UK for advice), have a look at:
