Tracing cheques

In the absence of cheque stubs, does anyone know if it's possible for a bank to say whose account a cheque was paid into going back 7 years? Given the money laundering regulations, I'm sure it's technically possible, but would they provide this as a service to the public? TIA

To the public? Absolutely not!

To their customers - they will keep records, I think the guidelines state for 6 or 7 years - though the cheques themselves will almost certainly have been destroyed by then. As the cheque issuer you could ask your bank to find out where a cheque was paid in, and to which acct - but the drawer's bank might refuse/delay/claim they don't know.......

They would know and *should* be bale to provide either the cheque or a scan or microfiche print of it. The collecting bank details should be on it somewhere and also, these days, there is a reasonable chance the number of the account into which it was paid in will be on it too.

Well, when I say "the public" I of course mean the account holder.

Presumably they wouldn't do any of the above if The Revenue had asked for the details.

The few cheques I have from the time in question (the days when they sent them out with the statement) have a variety of printed stuff on the back. Sometimes you can pick out a 6 figure sort code but, more often, the numbers are longer.

Some do, but a lot of these from 2000 don't. Where the sort code is shown on the face, it does not tie in with any of the figures on the back, which leads me to believe that those without anything on the front may not have the sort code on the back either.
