trying to pay into sister's a/c using Mastercard

Hi, I want to pay a sum into my sister's a/c at a UK high street bank, using my Mastercard which is linked to my own a/c at another UK high street bank but unfortunately one which doesn't have a big branch network in my part of the country.

I thought I should be able to do this by going into a branch of my sister's bank and paying using my card and a chip-and-pin machine. But the clerk, who did not seem to be the sharpest knife in the kitchen drawer, said their machines only accept their cards. The nearest branch of my own bank is 50 miles away.

I should maybe mention that my sister's bank uses Visa, not Mastercard, for its card offerings.

Advice?

I pay money into my daughter's bank via my online banking. Once the sort code and account number are set up it's just a couple of clicks.

She buys and posts the presents for my grandchildren on two continents, and I transfer the money into her account. Saves me a lot of hassle. ;-)

I believe that most cash machines accept most cards, so perhaps you could draw cash locally, then pay it in at your local "sister's" branch?

Er yes I did think of that :-) but the amount is too large to be drawn out at an ATM or paid using the internet, although by no means too large to be paid using chip-and-pin.

Weird - my bank has a daily limit for the sum of any internet (BACS) plus chip & pin (swipe).

Assuming you've also got a daily limit, what about setting up a series of BACS xfers for successive days?

The obvious thing would be to ring your bank and ask - but banks stopped talking to their customers some years ago :-(

"> Hi, I want to pay a sum into my sister's a/c at a UK high street bank,

Cheques are very useful. You write one at home and take it to any branch of your sister's bank to pay in.

Mastercard is a credit card, you can use it to pay merchants you buy things from. You may also be able to use it to withdraw cash, but it is not a means of transferring money to another customer's account. I am also confused by "my Mastercard which is linked to my own a/c". Credit cards are not linked to current accounts. Do you mean Maestro? It is a debit card, normally linked to a current account, but the problem is still the same, you cannot use it to transfer money to another customer's account.

Couldn't you use online or telephone banking to make the transfer to your sister's account?

It sounds like it's the cash advance facility that he is trying to use. You should be able to go into any bank affiliated with MasterCard and obtain cash to whatever limit your card issuer allows. Obviously if you're planning to immediately deposit that money into someone's bank account at the same branch then you don't need to actually take possession of the cash itself. The problem seems to be that his sister's bank isn't part of the MasterCard network.

I assume the linkage to his bank account refers to the account from which monthly repayments to the card are taken by direct debit.
