I want to retire at the end of August, but I see it's a Bank Holiday. Can you retire ( and get paid for ) on a Bank Holiday?

Depends on your contract of employment.

Unless I'm missing something, I don't see a problem.
The last day of August (Wed 31st) *isn't* a bank holiday - even though Monday 29th is.
Even if your last 'working' day were a bank holiday, that would surely be treated in the same way as if you were continuing to work beyond that date. The next day would then be your first day of retirement . .
