Hi,
My boyfriend had his tax return examined by the Inspector because of a discrepancy between salary figures quoted by his ex-employer and those on his P45. Turns out that he'd had income that he hadn't realised and that hadn't gone onto his tax return (all genuine error, and he didn't get hardly any penalty from the Inspector so he obviously realised this too). Now my idiot boyfriend realised that inbetween jobs - and in the same tax year in question - he did a day of consulting for a big architect's firm and invoiced them for this. He forgot to put that on his return and he is now paranoid that having signed the 'that's it' form for the revenue, he's going to get found out and thrown into jail. Okay, we both think he should declare this, but we are very nervous that having signed the 'that's it' document he'll get really badly treated. On the other hand, if we keep quiet are the revenue likely to find out about it from the architect's books? The invoice was for £1,000 and they are a multi-national firm turning over millions who must spend hundreds of thousands each year on consultants. We real;ly don't know what to do for the best.
