Un-authorized charge.

Hi,

Blockbuster has made a charge of 13.99 to my Debit card, but I didn't authorize this payment. I know I got to report this to my Bank, but should I also report it to the police or will the Bank do this?

Thanks for your time.

Have you spoken to Blockbuster?

When you sign up to Blockbuster you have to provide a card number. You also give them permission to debit your card for any extra charges due. So if you take out a DVD and return it late they will automatically deduct the late payment. If they have done this by mistake they should be willing to correct it.

Its unlikely the police will be interested at all, pursuing it through your bank/Blockbuster is the best option.

Didn't you give them that authorisation when you _first_ signed up with Blockbuster? What did the terms and conditions say when you signed on the dotted line?

The debit may be incorrect but it probably does has your authorisation.

I suspect no crime is involved.

How do you know the OP has even set foot in a Blockbuster store, let alone signed-up with them??

Just report it to the bank, they should put the amount "into dispute" while they look into it, and they shouldn't charge any interest on the amount if it makes you overdrawn (unless they eventually prove you *did* authorise the transaction). It might be a mistake rather than fraud. If it is fraud it's down to the bank to pursue it with the police.

But have you ever rented anything from them? ISTR that Blockbuster insist you sign a continuous card authority when you become a member, even if you're paying in cash. I was about to join a few years ago but there is no way I am ever signing a continuous card authority. I was happy to leave a 20 deposit for the video but they weren't having it, so I told them where to shove their video.

If you have signed one of these (perhaps thinking you were signing for a one-off payment), then you'll have to take it up with Blockbuster, the bank won't want to know.
