Glenn,
Before providing a good answer, there are some questions that need to be answered.
What country are you in? What line of business are you in? Do you plan to stay small or do you plan to grow your business? Do you plan to have employees? What is your background with software? What is your background with accounting?
If we know what your needs are, we can recommend a good solution. Most people will just reflexively respond that you should purchase QuickBooks and send you on your way. That's like saying, "If you're hungry, go to McDonalds." What are you hungry for, high calorie, fat-laden fast food or do you want Chinese, Mexican, or Italian food?
Thanks,
Arnold

order a salad...no dressing......
Hi Glenn Arnold is absolutley right, it s not only an Accounting software that need. Payroll is critical, can be complicated or simple depends where you are located. do you want to print your own checks, use Direct Deposit, file and Pay your taxes, W-2's, 1099's etc....
QuickBooks is a Great Accounting software and Payroll as well. wait till QuickBooks 2007 is on the market and buy it. You can choose from standar Payroll, on federal forms 941 and 940 enhanced Payroll Federal and state forms included or Assisted Payroll. Only assisted Payroll offers Filing and Paying taxes on your behalf with or without Direct Deposit, now a days everyone wants money in their backaccount and receive a paystub. why waiste the time printing checks and moeny on checks hope this help give you an idea how to start. or you can check this website
Mojo,
Let's agree to disagree.
You wrote that QuickBooks is "a great accounting software and payroll as well." A-Systems has been in the accounting software business (and payroll as well) since 1978 and our understanding of the meaning of greatness and the functions of accounting and payroll run counter to your opinion. Based on the number of companies calling us in search of an alternative to QuickBooks, our opinion is shared by at least a few others.
Thanks,
Arnold

Hello everyone. I'd have to say my recommendation would be QuickBooks, since they are the #1 Accounting Software. However, trying to give you options here:
I hope this helps! Amy
