investment losses, can you help??

How and what do you do about your investment in a company that has filed chapter 11? The investment was approx. $5k and now it's all gone. Problem is.. I don't know where to put it my return. I'm pretty sure it goes on schedule D but where and how??? Someone Please help...it's getting late. Thanks, tharper42 at comcast.net

No, your value is gone, or better yet, just really small. Sell the shares to claim the loss, or wait until the business is actually not a business anymore.

You can't until you sell your shares.

Yes, ~when~ you sell the shares you can claim the loss.

Bankruptcy doesn't mean the shares are worthless, although it may mean they are worth less than what you paid for them.
