Trying to set up investment HELP

I am starting to use Q2004 New User Edition (came installed on my laptop). I want to establish and use it for a few months, and then I'll upgrade to some form of the 2005 software.

Banking works OK, but trying to do an investment account. When I first set it up, I chose to let Quicken download from the broker's site. WHat I got were TX's from the first of the year, which is OK, but I am now trying to somehow tell Q that I had shares BEFORE Quicken. I have trued to manually enter the shares, but there doesn't seem to be a transaction type that says to Quicken "There were shares before you came into the picture - it's none of your buciness where they came from or where the money came from to obtain them. Just take the security, how many shares and use this as BQ (Before Quicken) data.

What am I missing here? I don't think I'm stupid, but setting up Quicken is getting to be extremely painful.

Can someone help out here?

I'm not familiar with the capabilities of New User Editions of Quicken, so it is possible that that could be an issue for you.

But Quicken - in general - definitely has investment transaction types that will allow you to enter data occuring prior to your earliest downloaded transactions. For starters "Bought - Shares Bought", "Add - Shares Added", and "Adjust Share Balance" come to mind. If you don't see those transaction types, I suspect that is a limitation of the New User Edition; if you do see them, then your description is inadequate to determine what your problem is.
