archiving tools?

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to archive data from HQ to a backup database? I know there are some options for sale, but ........... well we really can't spend any more money on RMS.

Thanks Wil

Wil,

As Jason said in your previous post, just backup your database, name it archived database or something similar, and keep that backup safe so you can access it when needed for the older information you need to keep.

Actually that's what i'm trying to avoid. Our db grows very fast, about 1g a month. It works fine now (at 13g), however I'm worried about loss of performance in the future. So I think we want 2 databases, one current and active and another active db, for reporting older info. my idea (currently in testing, so far so good) is to create a backup, then restore that to a new db name. then purge the original, and continue to run. After this we would simply move data from the original db into the archive copy, so we should get one full db, and one much smaller db for day to day operations.

That is a very large amount of growth for a database. The items in a database don't take up much space, so you should be able to add thousands of items to a database every month with marginal growth. The same with transactions. What does take up a lot of space is journal images. Check to make sure you are only journaling one image of the receipt. If you have two printers setup there is the option to journal the receipt at each printer, which would grow the database very fast. The other thing that will grow the database that fast is if the log file is growing way too fast, it should typically only be around 1-2mb, if it's any larger you will want to investigate why and fix it. I am no expert on databases by any stretch of the imagination, but I have frequented this group for many years and from everything I've read on here the database really shouldn't grow that fast. Even for big chains. So there must be something these other stores do when they setup their databases that keeps their database sizes manageable. I know you don't want to spend anymore money, but other than looking into why this is happening more closely with a SQL specialist and have them setup something custom for you, or buying a archiving tool such as the one put out by Retail Realm, both of which will cost you, your only other option would be to save a copy of a backup, delete journals for a period of time which you are comfortable with, and use the newly cleaned database in the store. Good luck.
