Can I operate a back office computer without a dongle?

Can I operate a back office computer without a dongle? In quicksell I was able to use the quicksell manager on the back office computer (not networked) by making a backup of the database file on the register and restoring on the back office machine... this allowed me to do invoicing, run reports, etc.. without taking the register out of service???

Charles,

Yes, you can do the same thing.

I'm curious as to why you are not networked between the two. If both machines have network cards in them, as most computers have built within the last 5 years, a simple network can be created for less than $100! If its just two machines, only about $20 for a cable!

I can tell you why this is needed. Just this weekend. Had handwritten inventory pages to add about 500 new items to database. Rather than sitting in the store and doing it - want to go home and input the data, export that department data, put on jump drive to go back to store and import into the database.

No need for store ops POS at all. Just back office data. Anyone who knows how to do this without having to network, let me know because the eval runs out in just a few days then its a real pain. Being from QS days, I of course sell the system as being able to use back office for just what I described. Going to be in trouble at some point.

What did you do in QS days? Copy the Access database file, take it home and edit it than bring it back and save it over the old version? Was there more import and export available in QS?

If you are doing the file copy and overwrite thing, you can still do it - it's just a lot harder than a simple file copy ; lots of backups and creates and chances to mess things up but good.

Much easier for bulk editing would be to create an Excel spreadsheet for the user to enter data at home. Save the item data as CSV, then use QSImport or some other tool to load it. If you know the format of the spreadsheet, you can save the layout so that it doesn't have to be remapped everytime.

If you have a broadband connection at the store and at home, try PC_Anywhere by Symantec, about 100.00. It is not as fast as sitting in front of your store computer but pretty fast. Not practical with a dial up connection, too slow.
