DONGLE

I have a 3 lane dongle for our system, but am only running 2 pos registers. The 3rd computer only hosts the database (server). Right now I have the dongle installed on one of the pos computers, but sometimes I get the evluation error because I didnt start the registers in the right order.. My question is: does the "system" see the dongle only when the POS program starts up, or when the computer itself has started up. I would like to put the dongle on my "server" computer, but would I have to actually start the POS program on the computer in order to "activate" the dongle for the network???

Anyone???

thanks

Yep your right the pc that the dongle is on has to be started first in POS. SO if you put it on the server you have to start the server and go into pos first on the server. It then checks to see if you have one on that machine at that time.

The dongle is only detected when POS or Manager are opened. It's a silly system...

I have a very similar setup. My solution was to put the dongle on Register 1 and to let everyone who opens know that Register 1 MUST be started first. After a short while, it just becomes habit.

Dongles are so 1980s.

thanks for the info,... yeah I kinda knew the POS saw the dongle,.. so you say as long as I start Manager on my server, the rest of the network will be ok???

Arve,

Yes, if your dongle is on the server, you need to go into POS or Manager _first_ every day.

thanks Jeff,.. so if I dont reboot the machine every day and as long as the manager is up and running still form the original "startup" the system "sees" the dongle??

No, you have to close and reopen Manager or POS for the dongle to be detected - leaving manager open will not work.

Hi Glenn,,, maybe its my whole system that is really screwed up,... just starting manager up, in the right order ofcourse, did not "activate" the dongle,...not until I started POS on the "server" the other 2 pos registers wnet out of Evaluation mode,... so does Manager NOT count then as a "first" register??? also,... you do not need a dongle to run manager, so why would the manager "activate" the dongle on a network if thats what you were trying to do?? sorry, hope that made sense!
