Can't connect to SQL via SO Administrator

The Issue: Whenever I go into SO Adminstrator I can NOT connect to my SQL server. I keep getting the following message: "To connect to this server you must use SQL Server Management studio or SQL Server Management Objects (SMO)."

I get this with either method of authenication (SA or Windows Integrated).

Setup Configuration: SQL Server 2005 on Windows Server 2008 with port 1433 opened and remote connections via TCP allowed.

POS is Windows XP SP2 with all updates. Has .Net 2.0 SP1 installed.

I am able to 'configue' and connect my POS machines for operations. This is very very strange.

Any Help would be greatly appreciated, S

Ps. Just for grins I did install SQL Management Studio Express -- I can connect via the SSMSE but still can not connect via SO Administrator.

Thank you so much for the info. It was exactly what I needed.

BTW: Just curious -- RMS 2.0 is the latest software. SQL 2K5 is the latest software. Why would I need to install a backward compatibility pack? And further more, why wouldn't it be better documented? Arghhhh

I'm pretty sure that even though RMS supports the SQL 2005 database server, it still runs in SQL 2000 mode.
