Can't Connect to HQ Manager

I recently updated from MSDE to SQL Express...All my stores are talking to the the HQ Database...I can open the Manager if I am sitting on the server...However I can no longer access the Manager from the store locations...Can anyone tell me what I need to change in order to restore this communication?

Thanks

Anthony,

How were you connecting before? Remote Desktop, pcAnywhere, VPN, etc.

By default, SQL has database sharing turned off for security reasons. Depending how you connect tells us what to do next.

Do you have a VPN between locations, or did you just route the SQL TCP/IP port from the router to the server?

What about other systems that are at the same location as the server? Can you connect from a remote system that is on the same LAN?

SQL 2005 changes a lot of things about the way clients connect. First, by default it turns off all remote connections. Second, the default install uses a Named Instance rather than the 'default' instance that SQL 2000 and MSDE used. Third, It doesn't necessarily use the same PORT for TCP/IP Connections, meaning that you may need to change the port mapping at the Router or change the Firewall setting to allow access on a different port.

For remote connections to HQ, I recommend using some variety of remote control software (Windows built in Remote Desktop, VNC, PCAnywhere, pick your favorite) rather than a direct connection from a local install of HQ Manager to a remote SQL Server. The remote control option will provide a much more usable interface and doesn't require a VPN or open SQL ports.
